With its trunk and huge tusks, the mammoth strongly resembles its cousin the elephant.

This prehistoric animal died out more than 10,000 years ago and is one of the best-known extinct animals, thanks in particular to the very well-preserved fossils found buried in the ice. Originally from Africa, mammoths then spread more widely, to Eurasia, North America and the plains of Siberia.

This mammal had thick fur to fight against the cold and sometimes even a real woolen coat in the woolly mammoth.

Its large curved tusks could reach up to 3 m in length and were used, among other things, to search the ground for food.

It is believed that global warming is the cause of their extinction. Did you know that there are paintings of mammoths on frescoes?

Hunted by prehistoric men, mammoths feature in hunting scenes and decorate the walls of magnificent caves.
