It is one of the five species of monotremes, the only oviparous mammals, that is to say which lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.
The platypus has a duck bill, webbed feet and a flattened tail resembling that of beavers. It measures between 40 and 50 cm and can weigh 2.4 kg. It can live up to 21 years in the wild, but in captivity its life expectancy varies between 10 and 15 years. The platypus lives in lakes and small streams. He spends on average twelve hours a day eating.
As the platypus is oviparous, it needs a burrow to lay and protect the eggs. The burrow can reach twenty meters deep.
